At first, Freddy Fazbear's Pizza was a family-friendly location where patrons were delighted by animatronic characters, but as the shop closed, that comfortable environment becomes unsettling. In the first game, players assume the position of a security guard working the nite shift, trying to survive from midnight till six in the moing when the animatronics start to prowl the area. The striking contrast between the upbeat daylight images and the eerie midnight ambiance is what makes fnaf so memorable.

To generate a feeling of fear, FNAF does not need to continuously move creatures into the player's line of sight. Conversely, when players are unaware of precisely what is going just out of sight, the game often evokes the greatest amount of terror. When observed via a camera, a room may look vacant at one point, yet moments later, an animatronic may have moved. Every frame is scrutinized by players as they look for minute alterations and worry whether they missed anything. Although the original FNAF's cameras allowed for the observation of several locations, players could only keep an eye on one view at a time, therefore there were always times when certain places went unnoticed. A dark passage is significantly more horrifying than a creature that is readily seen because of this information gap, which allows the imagination to run wild.
