El bello idilio que surge entre la joven Selenia, muchacha humilde que había sido abandonada al nacer y fue recogida por una meretriz, y un joven de buena familia, Alcesimarco, se ve interrumpido por el padre del joven, empeñado en casar a su hijo con una chica de su misma clase social. El fuerte idealismo de los jóvenes se enfrentará al realismo de los adultos y el amor y la conveniencia guiarán la comedia. Las divertidas situaciones de la trama argumental irán tejiendo los cabos que desembocarán directamente en el triunfo del amor.
