Ismael es un joven aventurero que llega al puerto de Nantucket dispuesto a enrolarse como marinero en cualquier barco que vaya a la caza de ballenas y termina haciéndose a la mar en el Pequod, buque ballenero que se encuentra bajo el mando del capitán Ahab.
Después de iniciar la navegación, el capitán Ahab reune a todos los tripulantes y les comunica que el objetivo fundamental de la travesía no es solamente cazar ballenas, sino que lo que pretende es matar a Moby Dick, la gran ballena blanca que lo dejó mutilado de una pierna y contra la que siente un odio inmenso.
A partir de este momento la travesía de Ismael y el resto de la tripulación del Pequod se convierte en una singladura trágica por todos los mares y océanos del mundo. Descubierta la enorme ballena blanca, la lucha entre Moby Dick y los marineros del Pequod se produce a lo largo de tres días durante los cuales, uno a uno, las lanchas arponeras y el mismo Pequod son destrozados por la ballena.
Finalmente, Ahab y toda la tripulación, exceptuando a Ismael, el narrador de la historia, pagan con sus vidas la locura y el irrefrenable deseo de venganza del capitán del Pequod.
