Corazón, emoción y pasión en lugar de pura funcionalidad: estas son, en esencia, las señas de identidad de Tama Sumo como DJ. Comenzó en 1993 en el bar Drama, en Berlín / Kreuzberg, uno de los primeros bares en contar con un DJ propio los fines de semana y un punto de encuentro clave para la escena antes de ir a los clubes. Drama fue de los pocos espacios que en esa época apostaba por el house, mientras el techno dominaba la mayoría de clubs y bares. Tama Sumo pinchaba principalmente vocal house al estilo de Nueva York y pronto se convirtió en DJ habitual de los sábados gays en Café Moskau.

A principios de 1994 comenzó a tocar de forma regular en el legendario Club Globus / Tresor, donde se convirtió en residente durante aproximadamente diez años. Desde entonces empezó a integrar distintos géneros de música electrónica en sus sets de house, una mezcla que ha ido perfeccionando con los años y que sigue siendo central en sus actuaciones actuales.

Desde 2001, Tama Sumo también pinchaba regularmente en la fiesta Dance With The Aliens en el antiguo OstGut, el club predecesor de Berghain, lo que abrió la puerta a su residencia en el Panorama Bar & Berghain poco después de su apertura. Su estilo es variado, abarcando House, Disco, Techno, un toque de Detroit Electro y Pop. “Para mí, la música es algo muy subjetivo y siempre intento acercarme a ella con intuición y corazón“, comenta Tama Sumo.

“Ser DJ significa, para mí, conectar con el público sin palabras, interactuar con la pista y ofrecer lo que necesita, manteniéndome fiel a mí misma. Es fundamental que la música, el público y yo fluyamos libremente. Tengo que desconectar la cabeza y dejarme llevar. Me encanta crear y jugar con distintos estados de ánimo y atmósferas. Y sigo fascinada por cómo la música puede liberar tanta energía y diversión.

A principios de 2008 lanzó su primer disco, una colaboración con Prosumer para el sello OstGut. En 2012 remezcló “Zooz” de la cantante y activista sudsudanesa Mary Boyoi (Süd Electronic) y, junto a Lakuti y The Neighbourhood Character, formó Tarantism, remezclando “Ready To Lose” de The Knife (Rabid Records, 2014). En 2021, Tama Sumo y Lakuti publicaron An Ode to Audre dentro de la compilación Fünfzehn + 1 en OstGut Ton. El dúo también realizó un remix de Fertile Garden (Emerge) de Barbie Bertisch para Love Injection Records en Nueva York en 2022.

En 2013, Tama Sumo y Lakuti comenzaron a curar varias noches de viees en el Panorama Bar de Berghain, y en 2015 lanzaron sus eventos Your Love en Londres, que ahora también se celebran trimestralmente en Panorama Bar. Estas noches ponen el foco en la comunidad y en celebrar la riqueza y diversidad de la música.

Heart, emotion, and passion rather than pure functionality – these are the hallmarks of Tama Sumo as a DJ. She began her jouey in 1993 at Drama bar in Berlin / Kreuzberg, one of the first bars to feature its own weekend DJ and a key gathering point for the scene before heading to clubs. Drama was one of the few venues playing house at a time when techno dominated most clubs and bars. Tama Sumo initially focused on New York-style vocal house and quickly became a regular behind the decks at Café Moskau’s gay Saturdays.

By early 1994, she started playing regularly at the legendary Club Globus / Tresor, becoming a resident DJ for roughly ten years. She began blending different electronic music genres into her house sets – a fusion she has continually refined and that remains central to her performances today.

Since 2001, Tama Sumo has also been a fixture at the Dance With The Aliens parties at the old OstGut, Berghain’s predecessor club, which eventually led to her residency at Panorama Bar & Berghain shortly after it opened. Her style is eclectic, spanning House, Disco, Techno, a touch of Detroit Electro, and Pop. “Music is very subjective for me, and I always approach it with intuition and heart,” Tama Sumo explains.

“To be a DJ means connecting with the audience without words, interacting with the crowd, and giving them what they need while staying true to myself. It’s essential that the music, the crowd, and I flow freely together. I have to switch off my head and go with the flow. I love creating and playing with different moods and atmospheres. And I’m still amazed by how music can release such energy and joy.

”

In early 2008, she released her first record, a collaboration with Prosumer for the OstGut label. In 2012, she remixed South Sudanese singer and activist Mary Boyoi’s Zooz (Süd Electronic) and, together with Lakuti & The Neighbourhood Character, formed Tarantism, remixing The Knife’s Ready To Lose (Rabid Records, 2014). In 2021, Tama Sumo and Lakuti released An Ode to Audre as part of the Fünfzehn + 1 compilation on OstGut Ton. The duo also remixed Barbie Bertisch’s Fertile Garden (Emerge) for New York’s Love Injection Records in 2022.

In 2013, Tama Sumo and Lakuti began curating Friday nights at Berghain’s Panorama Bar, and in 2015 they launched their Your Love events in London, which now also take place quarterly at Panorama Bar. These nights focus on community and celebrating the richness and diversity of music.
