About the Event
Experience opera like never before in this astonishing performance of masterworks by Verdi at Rome's remarkable Baths of Caracalla.
Rigoletto is a three-act play by Giuseppe Verdi written in 1851 and based on Victor Gugo’s play Le Roi S’amuse (Fr.: The king has fun). The play was banned by the censors for its immoral character and sabotaging the authority of king’s court, therefore in Verdi’s opera the king’s character was substituted with a duke. Rigoletto is thought to be the composer’s first opera masterpiece which presented an immediate box-office success since its premiere in La Fenice Theatre in Venice.

Baths of Caracalla
The Baths of Caracalla are one of the best remaining examples of the ancient public baths of Rome. The city´s second largest Roman thermae, or public baths, Caracalla is the only site in which it has been possible to restore the original decorative scheme. Built during the reigns of the Emperors Septimius Severus and Caracalla (212 AD to 216 AD), under imperial patronage, the baths were immensely popular. Contemporary descriptions create a picture of oriental paving in coloured marble, enormous marble columns, glass paste mosaics, painted stucco, marbled walls and hundreds of colossal statues. Nonetheless, the baths fell into disuse in the 6th Century, and were allowed to decay. Extensive excavations in the 19th and 20th Centuries returned the Baths to their current state. Since 2001, this spectacular venue hosts concerts and performances of operas on a movable stage outwith the main structure, so as not to put stress on the ancient ruins.
Giuseppe Verdi
Giuseppe Verdi was an Italian opera composer. From a young age, he developed a musical education with the help of a patron and soon dominated the Italian opera. In fact by his 30s, he became one of the most influential opera composer all over the classical scene. His most famous operas are Il Trovatore, Rigoletto and La Traviata. Furthermore, he was able to establish himself as a landowner with the income from his successful operas and focus on his private life. However, he soon returned to the scene with his new popular work Aida (1871), and three masterpieces: Otello, Requiem and Falstaff.
