El género musical de My Chemical Romance es muy debatido: hay quien los han catalogado como grupo emo, lo que ellos desmienten despreciándolo y autodenominándose más como un grupo de rock alternativo. Tienen influencias de Queen, The Smiths, Morrissey, The Cure, The Misfits, Iron Maiden, The Smashing Pumpkins y Black Flag, entre otros.
El nombre del grupo viene de un libro escrito por Irvine Welsh llamado "Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance" (en español Éxtasis: tres relatos de un romance químico). Fue sugerido por Mikey Way, bajista del grupo y hermano menor de Gerard, que se encontró con la novela mientras que trabajaba en la librería Barnes & Noble. Su nombre es a veces abreviado como "MCR" y llamado "My Chem" por fans.
En Marzo del 2009 salió el video de la canción, "Desolation Row", canción de Bob Dylan versionada para la banda sonora de la película "Watchmen".
En noviembre de 2010 publicaron su cuarto álbum de estudio, Danger days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.
El 22 de marzo de 2013, la banda anunció su separación, que se extendió hasta el 31 de octubre de 2019, cuando anunciaron su regreso en forma de un concierto que tendría lugar en el Shrine de Los Angeles dos meses más tarde.
